✈ One Thing You Must Do In: New York City
Couldn’t work out how to auto-play but Alicia Key’s “Empire State of Mind” is perfect for setting the scene – enjoy! By the way I don’t own the rights to this song.
In ‘One thing you must do’ I’ll be recommending the one thing I think all visitors should do in a city I’ve travelled to.
Arguably the most famous and powerful city in the world and home to over 8 million people, New York City (NYC), nicknamed “The Big Apple” is the star of today’s blog post.
I never really understood why NYC was called “The Big Apple”…well…
“Apple” referred to the substantial prize awarded by the racing courses and was first popularised in reference to New York horse racing in 1920. It was later widely adopted in the 1970s after a promotion campaign commissioned by the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Now that mystery is solved, pin pointing just ONE thing you must do in NYC is a pretty tough challenge considering the velocity of its offering.
However, for first time visitors I found the Real New York Tours an invaluable experience.
Run by real New Yorkers, they take you onto the streets of New York on foot and subway exploring the history, culture and side streets.
The very flexible Big Apple Private Tour led by Fabrice, our experienced and passionate guide, gave us an impressive introduction to NYC and helped us get our bearings around the city so I’d recommend doing this at the beginning of your trip.
Ground Zero, Wall Street, Greenwich Village, Soho, Little Italy, China Town and Central Park was just some of the famous sites we covered over 6-7 hours.
I did say it was a challenge to name just ONE thing you must do in NYC…so here’s a few others:
- See NYC from Top of the Rock
- Take a cruise to admire the Skyline
- Watch a Broadway production
- Visit Woodbury Common Premium Outlets (you’ll need one full day there)
- Experience Grand Central Terminal
NYC is such an exciting city, can’t wait to go back…if only it didn’t take a day to get there! I ❤ NY
